The wake collection evolved out of an interest in the contextual
qualities of small wood waste. The collection offers a debate
on the interrelation between the material (wood), its natural
origin and its end of life as waste. The collection contains a
chair, two stools and a small table. It won two awards in the
Furniture Design Awards (FDA) in Singapore: grand prize and
best use of material ( 2012 ).
With the years of working with wood waste, it became clear to
me that there is a gap in the discussion of wood, as a material
and the original tree. The project aims to debate the loss of the
trees (chopped down to generate wood). The Christian ceremony
called " Wake" in which the relatives sit with the body of a loved
one for several days, in the process of parting with himher.
The ceremony gave the contextual background for the work. On
the technical level the project called for specific tools such as an
hydraulic two axles press and a special matrix to enable the gluing.
